Embark on a Journey Through the Heart of Saaremaa’s Southernmost Tip – The Sõrve Peninsula
Step into the rich history and breathtaking landscapes of the Sõrve Peninsula, a place that was once home to a vibrant community before the upheaval of World War II. The war reshaped this region forever, and today, only a few hundred residents remain to tell its story.
Our adventure begins at Tehumardi, where the Night Battle Monument stands as a powerful reminder of the brutal conflict that unfolded here during World War II.
Next, we visit a Viking Burial Site, an extraordinary archaeological discovery where, about 15 years ago, human skeletons and the remains of two Viking ships were uncovered. Benches are scattered throughout the site, offering a peaceful space to pause and reflect on the connection to Saaremaa’s ancient past.
As we continue, we pass the Port of Mõntu, a historically significant location from 1944, when thousands of people were forcibly relocated from Saaremaa during wartime.
Our next stop takes us to a chilling reminder of the Cold War era – a missile hangar, which offers a glimpse into the tense geopolitical climate of the time.
No visit to Sõrve would be complete without stopping at the iconic Sõrve Lighthouse. For a small fee, you can climb its 145 steps and be rewarded with stunning panoramic views. On clear days, you can see all the way to Latvia, with the Baltic Sea on one side and Riga Bay on the other. Ever wondered what it’s like to witness the waves from two seas meeting? Let us show you this spectacular sight.
We then make a photo stop at Ohessaare, where the rock stacks along the beach create a mesmerizing scene.
Our journey continues to Jämaja Cemetery, one of the most picturesque cemeteries by the sea.
As we move on, we pass the two-line concrete pyramid anti-tank fortifications, built during World War II, and the Lõu Lighthouse, which has stood since 1935.
After a day filled with rich history, stunning vistas, and stories, we make our way back to Kuressaare.
