Eastern Saaremaa Tour – a great choice for nature lovers
Join us for a 4–5 hour tour through the landscapes and history of Eastern Saaremaa.
As we travel through Muhu Island toward Saaremaa, you will see the causeway that connects the two islands. On the way, we will pass the Ö Monument, a local landmark that highlights the regional dialect where the letter Õ is pronounced as Ö.
Next, we drive through Orissaare, known for the oak tree growing in the middle of a school sports stadium. This unusual tree was voted European Tree of the Year in 2015 and is a memorable sight for many visitors.
We will then visit the Maasi Stronghold Ruins, sometimes called the Castle of Punishment. You can walk among the remains of this medieval fortress and look out over the surrounding countryside.
Nearby, we will stop at an ancient sacrificial stone with small cup marks, once part of a sacred grove.
Our route also includes St. Mary’s Lutheran Church, one of the oldest churches in Estonia. The building combines Romanesque and Gothic elements and offers a look at early church history on the island.
Eastern Saaremaa is known for its natural landscapes, and this tour gives you a chance to enjoy them at an easy pace. We will take a 5-kilometre walk through bog scenery, circling a quiet bog lake. A 9-metre viewing tower offers a good look over the bog and surrounding forest. In summer, it is possible to swim in the lake, and in autumn, the trail is suitable for berry picking.
After the walk, we will stop for lunch at the Tornimäe Dairy Café, located next to Tornimäe Church. It is a comfortable place to rest and try local food.
At the end of the tour, we will take you back to the ferry or to your accommodation on Saaremaa.
