Tallinn–Saaremaa: A Journey Through Estonia
Discover the changing landscapes and layered history of Estonia on a journey between the capital city and the islands.
The journey begins in Tallinn, where we may first take a short walk through the charming Old Town or explore some of its hidden corners before leaving the city behind. As the road continues westward, the scenery gradually opens up: forests deepen, wide fields stretch toward the horizon, and quiet villages appear along the way. Along the route you may notice historic churches, traces of Soviet-era architecture, modern solar parks, and even one of Estonia’s most unusual electric poles — locally known as the “bog fox”.
We pass through the small historic town of Lihula before reaching the coast, where the ferry awaits. During the relaxing 30-minute sea crossing you can enjoy the fresh sea air, admire the views, or simply take a break with a coffee or snack from the onboard café.
After arriving on Muhu Island, the journey continues across peaceful island landscapes and over the causeway that connects Muhu with Saaremaa. Along the way we can stop at a few curious and memorable places — a monument dedicated to a single letter, a mighty oak tree growing in the middle of a school stadium, an ancient cult stone marked with mysterious cup-shaped hollows, and the remarkable Kaali meteorite crater.
The journey ends in the island’s charming capital, Kuressaare, or directly at your accommodation.
This relaxed and flexible trip is perfect for travellers who want to turn a simple transfer into a memorable journey through Estonia’s nature, history, and island culture.
