Explore the Southernmost Tip of Saaremaa – The Sõrve Peninsula
Discover the history and dramatic landscapes of Sõrve, once a lively community before World War II changed it forever. Today, only a few hundred residents remain, and the peninsula holds some of Saaremaa’s most powerful stories.
Our tour begins at Tehumardi, where the Night Battle Monument marks one of the fiercest WWII battles.
We continue to a remarkable Viking Burial Site, where skeletons and two Viking ships were uncovered only about 15 years ago.
Next, we pass the Mõntu Port, tied to the tragic wartime evacuation of thousands of islanders in 1944, and visit a Cold War missile hangar, offering a rare glimpse into Soviet military history.
A highlight of the day is the Sõrve Lighthouse. For a small fee, you can climb its 145 steps for breathtaking views—on clear days, all the way to Latvia—where the waves of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga meet.
We continue with a photo stop at Ohessaare, famous for its striking rock stacks, and visit the scenic Jämaja Cemetery by the sea.
Along the way, we also pass the WWII anti-tank concrete pyramids and the Lõu Lighthouse.
After a day rich in stories and views, we return to Kuressaare.
