Discover the Spirit of Western Saaremaa
Our journey begins in Kuressaare. As we leave the town, we cross the picturesque Long Bridge, one of Estonia’s largest and oldest limestone bridges. This is where the landscape opens up and the calm rhythm of island life begins to unfold.
We then pass the mysterious “OO Boulder,” a natural rock formation said to resemble a horse. According to local folklore, the boulder was once Old Nick himself, who transformed into a horse to kidnap a village girl.
We continue to Lake Karujärv, the oldest lake in Saare County. With its sandy bottom and surrounding pine forests, it is a beloved spot during warm summer days for swimming, picnics, and relaxing in nature.
Driving further west, we pass the historic Pidula Manor, once home to Baltic German nobility. Here you will hear stories about the manor families and their significant role in Estonia’s past.
Our next stop is the Odalätsi Springs, a site rich in colourful legends. According to local stories, these bubbling springs were created by the footsteps of Old Nick himself. For generations, the water has been believed to have refreshing and even healing qualities.
Our final destination is the charming Mihkli Farm Museum in Viki. Here you can step into the everyday life of Saaremaa’s rural families from centuries ago. Traditional log houses, barns, tools, and a peaceful courtyard offer a vivid and authentic picture of old island life.
We then arrive at Kihelkonna St. Michael’s Church, a grand medieval church built in the late 13th century. Originally towerless and at times used as a lighthouse for sailors, it reflects centuries of island history. Just a short walk away stands one of Europe’s few free-standing belfries, and nearby lies one of Saaremaa’s largest historic cemeteries, established after burials inside churchyards were prohibited.
Before heading back to Kuressaare, we stop at the Rauna Viewing Tower, where you can enjoy panoramic views over forests, lakes, and the gently rolling landscape — a perfect final moment for photos and quiet reflection.
